Xtend Barre has been one of the best programs that I’ve been introduced to, it has truly changed my life mentally and physically. As a pageant contestant being physically fit is extremely important for the swimsuit competition. Although I’ve always had trainers, my body never really had the cut and sculpture until I started Xtend Barre. Xtend Barre has helped me with my presence, posture and my poise for stage. Xtend Barre helps me work those hard to reach areas in my core part of the body. I also appreciate that I get a full body workout, including upper body, lower body, balance/core, Cardio and an awesome stretch at the end. After having two children it’s hard to tone certain areas from the baby weight, and Xtend Barre has helped me focus on toning those difficult to reach areas. I also love how great I feel mentally, stretched, flexible and balanced. I would highly recommend Xtend Barre to anyone.

Trainers Reveal: The Best Abs Exercises of All Time
20 top fitness experts reveal their go-to move for a flat, sexy stomach.

Passé Abs Series
“This move is one of my all-time favorite abs sculpting exercises,” says Andrea Rogers, a former professional dancer, certified Pilates instructor, and creator of Xtend Barre. “It strengthens the abdominal muscles while developing stability of the pelvic lumbar region. You can also amp things up by increasing the tempo.”

To do it: Start seated, then lean back, resting your weight on your forearms (bending your elbows behind your body, fingers facing forward). Extend both legs straight out in front of you. Bend your right knee into a ‘passé position’ by pointing your right foot and pressing the inside edge of your right foot along the inside of your left knee. Draw your abs in tight and lift your legs off the mat and towards the chest (maintaining passé position). Bring your right knee all the way up to the right side of your chest and then lower your legs (still in passé) back down, about two inches from the floor (or as low as you can). Repeat 8 times and then switch legs. Try to do 8 reps on each side, for up to 2 sets.

2012’s hottest fitness trends

08 Feb, 2012

Bored with doing the same workout every week? Feel like you’ve reached a weight loss plateau, but can’t stay motivated? Check out these fun new workouts to kick start your fittest year yet. By Fiona O’Callaghan.

Hula hooping

Hula hoop your way to killer abs while improving balance and flexibility. 10 minutes of hooping burns almost 100 calories but forget school yard hoops, it’s the heavier adult versions that get results.

“The great thing about hula hooping is that it doesn’t feel like exercise,” says Donna Aston, personal trainer and managing director at Aston Fitness.

“If you enjoy a form of activity, you’re more likely to stick with it. It requires concentration on technique and it’s almost impossible not to smile, both of which create great stress relief.”

There’s no excuse for missing your workout again, just turn the music on and get hooping! Check out Melbourne-based Coola Hoop at www.hulahoops.com.au and design your very own size and weight of hoop depending on your fitness level.

TRX

Developed by a US Navy Seal, TRX suspension training exercises improve strength, balance and core stability. The TRX Suspension Trainer uses your own body weight to perform hundreds of exercises.

“Suspension training is extremely functional, versatile and effective for all fitness levels,” says Aston. “My clients find TRX to be a great tool for traveling as it weighs next to nothing and provides a total body workout.”

The portable trainer can be set up in the gym, at home or even outside. Get your very own TRX suspension trainer at www.trxtraining.com.

Floor balling

Imagine ice hockey, but without the skates or ice. Floor balling is a six-person team sport that uses a short stick and plastic ball. But unlike hockey, floor balling is more about technique than strength and it’s fast pace ensures you get a great cardio workout.

Start your own team or check out the women’s national teams at www.floorball.org.au .
Speedminton

Love racquet sports but don’t want to pay membership fees to a tennis or squash club? Try speedminton! A cross between tennis and squash, speedminton uses a special racquet and weighted speeder which makes it ideal for playing on the beach when it’s too windy for other racquet sports.

With no net needed, the aim of the game is to get the speeder into your opponents square.

Check out the glow in the dark version at www.speedminton.com.au, perfect for the nocturnal types.

Xtend Barre

Dance class meets Pilates in this energetic combination of floor work, light weights and resistance balls. Loved by Madonna and Drew Barrymore, Xtend Barre is available in 14 studios across Australia and promises a lean, toned body as well as improved balance and flexibility.

See www.xtendbarreaustralia.com.au for more details and to find a class in your area.

I found Xtend Barre half way through my pregnancy at 20 weeks. I always enjoyed exercising, but needed a cardio and strength program to accommodate my changing body. Xtend Barre gave me a challenging and safe pregnancy workout. My instructors are both mothers and sources of inspiration. They have taken the time to educate me on proper form and shown me numerous non-core Xtend techniques that I can perform during the abdominal portion of the class. This has allowed me to stay engaged with my Xtend classmates without disrupting the flow of the program. They continued to encourage me as my pregnancy progressed and I noticed the classes improved my upper and lower body strength, flexibility, and endurance. For the entire second half of my pregnancy, I have taken 2-4 Xtend classes per week and I have thoroughly enjoyed the feeling that I am maintaining a great level of fitness for my baby and my post-delivery body.
